September 12 & 13, Saturday/Sunday 9:00 AM: CAMPING AT PARKERS PLACE

Plan on visiting the Retired Horse Farm in Alachua or hiking an easy trail in the morning. Bring your swim suit and we’ll cool off at the springs at Rum Island in the afternoon. After a refreshing dip in the springs, we’ll go back to Jeff’s and settle in for the evening. Jeff and Sandy will supply the meat (Jeff will do the cooking!) Bring a dish to share (when you sign up for the trip, please indicate category, i.e. dessert, salad, veggies, etc.) This will be an easy camping trip designed for beginners* who want to practice before the Fall camping trip. After dinner, we can sit around the fire and share camping experiences and swap tall tales (Jeff’s favorite!) In case you have never been to Jeff’s, there’s plenty of room to pitch tents – he lives on 5 acres with 2 horses, a dog and a cat! It’s beautiful and very relaxing.

*All campers are welcome regardless of experience level, but first-time campers are encouraged to attend, especially if you plan on going on the Fall trip! If you need camping equipment, let us know and we’ll help coordinate that for you. Bring your questions, concerns and just come on out and have a good time!
Cost: A bag of carrots at the Horse Farm and for Jeff’s horses! The hiking trail and Rum Island are free. You may possibly need money for breakfast. Food: Pack your lunch! Bring plenty of water/beverages and a dish to share for Saturday night’s dinner. Breakfast will either be leftovers or we’ll go to a local restaurant. Equipment: Tent, sleeping bag, etc., chair, bug spray, swimming suit, good walking shoes. Directions: When you sign up, be sure to provide an email address and we’ll send directions to you. Leader: Jeff P. 386-462-4918, Co-Leaders: Sandy P. 955-4550, Stephanie M. 502-1005

September 19, Saturday, 7:00 AM: ROCK SPRINGS PADDLE/WEKIWA SPRINGS STATE PARK:  The Wekiva River/Rock Springs Run Canoe Trail is officially designated as part of Florida’s Statewide System of Greenways and Trails. This canoe trail begins at Kings Landing on Rock Springs Run and continues down the run until it meets the Wekiva River. Rock Springs Run is bordered by Rock Springs Run State Preserve on one side and Wekiwa Springs State Park on the other. The mixture of swift and placid water offers a frequent change of pace. Traveling through sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, hammocks and swamps, paddlers will see a variety of wildlife including limpkins and white ibis. Quiet observers may see some rare and endangered species like the Florida black bear, wood stork and sandhill crane. Numerous islands, tributaries and lagoons provide opportunities for side trips and camping. We will do about a 5 hour paddle from King’s landing to Wekiva Springs State Park and then explore the park. We will meet at the McDonalds on Old St. Augustine road and I-95 and LEAVE at 7:00. It is about a two hour drive to the put in spot. It is $6.00 to get into the park. Bring LUNCH to take on the paddle, a boat it you have one and all the other stuff that goes with a paddle and plenty of water. I am looking into rentals so let me know if you want to rent a boat. Leader: Diane J. 821-6707. For more info on the web: http://www.floridastateparks.org/WekiwaSprings/
