Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) Guana
River site: We will hike to the south end of the park along a five-mile
loop trail. The trail wanders through the woods and along the Tolomato River
with great views of the marshes and Intracoastal Waterway. Bring water, bug
spray and snacks. Wear comfortable shoes. Leader: Diane J. 821-6707.
April 16th Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.– Earth Day celebration at the
Jacksonville Landing: Earth Day Jacksonville Ecology Fair
featuring booths, environmental information, children’s activities, recycled
craft projects, live music and theater. Earth Day has been a nationally
recognized holiday since April 22, 1970. Judy M. will be in a booth.
April 17th Sunday, 8:00 a.m.– Paddle at Alexander Springs State Park:
We will paddle down a beautiful river with lots of wildlife. It is a 7-mile
run. Bring lunch and water. Bring your own boat or rent from the park. Meet
at the McDonald's parking lot on US 17 across from the Dog Track in Orange

April 22nd Friday, 6:30 p.m. – Moonlight hike at Roosevelt Preserve:
The preserve is located in the Ft Caroline area. We’ll hike to a view of
the St. Johns River and marshes. Meet at the Hardee’s on Merrill Road. Wear
comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Leader: John T 910-9417
April 23rd Saturday, 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m.– Map & Compass Instruction &
Practice at Westside Regional Park: Participants will learn to
determine bearings, how to set up travel locations on a map, and how to
determine bearings of travel locations. Each team of two will work to find
eight locations in the park. Each participant must have a compass. Please
keep in mind that flat compasses are best for map work. Participants should
wear appropriate clothing, shoes, and bring compass and bug repellent.

April 30th Saturday, 7:45 a.m. - Paint the Town: This is a
service project in connection with the Jacksonville Housing Partnership. We
will be painting the outside of a home in the Brentwood Neighborhood of
Jacksonville. Participants in this project are elderly and own their own
homes. They are unable to do the work for themselves. You will receive a
“Paint the Town” T-shirt and lunch. After lunch you are excused for the day.
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on. Meeting location to be

May 1st Sunday, 2:00 p.m. – Shrimp Boat Festival in Fernandina Beach:
The festival is full of arts and crafts, music, food and pirates. Wear
comfortable shoes. Meet at the anchor near the harbor/on the river at the

Meeting
May 7th Saturday, 9:15 a.m. – Hike San Felasco Preserve in Alachua:
Leave Jax. By 7:30 a.m. It takes approx. 1 ½ hrs from JTB/I-95 to get to
Alachua. Meet at San Felasco at approx. 9:15 am. Cost: $2.00 per car. There
are 1-mile, 4-mile and 8-mile trails. Wear comfortable shoes; bring water,
snacks, and insect repellent and suntan lotion. Afterward, we will grill
hamburgers/hot dogs at Jeff's. Bring a dish to share. Jeff & Sandy will be
in Alachua, and will us meet at San Felasco Hammock (directions will be
provided at the May meeting.) Any Sidetracker member interested in
volunteering to lead the caravan to Alachua, please contact Sandy. Leaders:

May 8th Sunday, 4:00 p.m. Hike UNF Nature Trails: Meet at the
Trailhead, Parking Lot by the Security booth. Leader: Pat. T. 262-1428.
May 13th – 14th Friday night and Saturday, 6:00 p.m. Camping and paddle
Juniper Springs: Be the first down the river on Sat. morning and
hopefully see lots of wildlife. The park charges an entrance fee of $3.00
per person. Rental canoes are available for $27.82 per canoe plus a $20
refundable deposit. Note that the deposit must be paid in cash. You can call
ahead, pay, and reserve canoes possibly up to two weeks in advance. They
will shuttle you for $5.00, if you have your own boat. Campsites rent for
$15.00 a night. Bring camping gear, boat, food, lunch for the river run and

May 21st Saturday, 7:45 p.m. Guided ghost tour in St. Augustine:
Join us on a walking ghost tour that enters a certified haunted building
and takes you on a journey through the dark and narrow streets of historic
St. Augustine. Our guide will enlighten us with several haunting tales. The
cost of the ticket is $10.00. We may meet for dinner beforehand. Meet at the
ticket booth for the tour at 1 King St. St. Augustine. Leaders: Heike M.

May 22nd Sunday, 6:00 p.m. Beach Walk and Picnic: We will walk
along the beach and afterwards have a picnic dinner. Picnic may be a box
dinner for a small charge. Bring water and a chair. Leader: Marta 725-9521.

June 3rd Friday night, 6:00 p.m. Art Walk in St. Augustine:
Come wander through the streets of St. Augustine, browsing in art galleries,
sipping on wine and nibbling on cheese. We will meet at 6:00 p.m. in the
plaza/square located in downtown St. Augustine at the foot of the Bridge of

June 5th Sunday afternoon, 4:00 p.m. Quarterly Planning Meeting:
The activities listed in this newsletter are planned and organized by
members of Sidetrackers. There is no planning committee. If there is
something you want to do and want someone to do it with, check out, pick a
date, fill out the Activity Write up sheet and bring it to the planning
meeting. We will be picnicking in one of the city parks and playing
volleyball along with planning activities for July, August and September.

June 11th Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Paddle on the Santa Fe River: It
is a leisurely paddle on the scenic Santa Fe River. There will be a cost for
the shuttle service for those that bring your own boats. Rentals are
available. We will put in at the boat ramp in High Springs and take out at
the Hwy. 41 bridge. Bring lunch, water, and sun block, bug spray. We will
meet and leave from Hardee’s on Lane Avenue. Leaders: Gene and Heike Messer

June 12th Sunday afternoon, 2:00 p.m. golfing at Mandarin Mill:
Join us for an afternoon of playing miniature golf. Form your teams now for
an all-out competition or show up and be a ringer. Meet at the Mandarin Mill

July 8th through 10th Highland Games at Grandfather’s Mountain and
Camping: One of the largest gathering of the Clans in the nation
with pipes and drums, highland dancing, sheep herding, Celtic rock and good

State Park: Table Rock State Park is located in Pickens, S.C. on
the South Carolina/Georgia border. We will hike, camp and explore the area.
Three campsites will be reserved. If we fill those other can be reserved.
Cabin accommodation is available and you are responsible for making those
